The epic historical drama Black Ball features a lavishly edited triptych spanning almost a century of Spanish history, connecting the fates of three men in three different eras – 1932, 1937 and 2017. Their destinies are inextricably intertwined with the common threads of repressed sexuality, craving, historical trauma and facing social oppression under the shadow of fascism. The rich cast is led by Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, with special appearances by film icons such as Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. This ambitious project was co-directed by respected Spanish authors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, better known as Los Javis. The work stands out as a visually stunning, courageous and artistically extremely layered tribute to the work of Federico García Lorca, which offers a deeply emotional study of the survival of queer identity over time. The film began its triumphant march at the Cannes Film Festival, where the directors won the prestigious award for best director, after which it recorded extremely successful guest appearances at the festivals in Toronto (TIFF) and San Sebastián.
