Poland at the end of the 19th century, the establishment of capitalism in all its rawness and inhumanity is at work. On the wave of the same, Karol Borowiecki (Daniel Olbrychski), a Polish nobleman employed as an engineer in a textile factory, devises a way to open his own factory with the help of his German friend Max Baum (Andrzej Seweryn), heir to the old factory, and Jewish Moritz Welt (Wojciech Pszoniak), an independent entrepreneur. To realize the dream, the three friends must raise start-up capital, which will put them in a position to neglect their pride as well as their humanity. Despite all the obstacles and thanks to one 'insider' information, the venture succeeds, but on the day of the opening of the factory, Karol falsely denies the jealous husband Lucy Zucker (Kalina Jędrusik), otherwise a textile mogul, to maintain any relationships with her, let alone love ones, which will soon have very concrete consequences. The historical drama The Promised Land is an adaptation of the novel of the same name and a classic of Polish literature from the pen of Nobel laureate Wladysław Reymont, set in the rapidly growing Łódź, the industrial center of Poland, praised by critics for the very successful combination of lyrical and naturalistic approach by which Andrzej Wajda conveyed a panoramic view of the city's hectic and soulless development.
