The film is set in a small Slovak town during the Second World War. Honest carpenter Tóno Brtko gives in to pressure from his wife and his high-ranking brother-in-law and accepts the Aryanization law, taking over the shop of elderly Mrs. Lautmannová. Although the shop is unprofitable, Brtko does not give up, trying to maintain the appearance that he is enforcing the Aryanization law. The old woman comes to care for Brtko as if he were her own son, while he, in turn, helps her whenever he can. The day is approaching when all Jews will receive orders for deportation — everyone except Mrs. Lautmannová. Tóno initially hides her, but soon persuades her to turn herself in. The course of events ultimately places Tóno Brtko in a life-or-death situation between two extremes: honesty and self-interest… Award: This celebrated film by the directing duo Kadár–Klos, which was banned in Czechoslovakia for twenty years, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966.
