Pleasantville United States of America, 1998, 124 min In this dystopian satire, modern teenagers David and his sister Jennifer are magically drawn into a black-and-white 1950s television sitcom called Pleasantville, where life appears perfect but is completely devoid of depth, individuality, and free will. Director Gary Ross uses this isolated, sterile town as a metaphor for totalitarian conformity, where there are no fires, books are blank, and citizens know neither art nor passion. The key dystopian shift occurs with the introduction of human emotions, literature, and sexuality, which triggers a visual transformation of the world from black and white into full color, while also provoking a violent response from conservative authorities who, through censorship, bans, and physical repression, attempt to preserve the old order. The film thus becomes a powerful reflection on societal fears of change, celebrating rebellion and the acceptance of imperfection over an artificially imposed and oppressive harmony. Tickets can be purchased at the Art-kino box office (open daily one hour before the first screening) or via the CoreEvent platform.
