A classic study of voyeurism, Rear Window follows L.B. “Jeff” Jefferies (James Stewart), a photographer and reporter confined to his apartment due to a broken leg, where he spends his days looking out over the courtyard. To pass the time between visits from his glamorous girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) and his nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter), Jefferies entertains himself by observing his neighbours through binoculars. Out of boredom, he begins to construct a scenario in which one of them has murdered his wife and disposed of the body. In an unexpected twist, his imagined scenario may turn out to be true. The problem arises when Jefferies must convince his girlfriend, his nurse, and the police of what he believes he has seen. As in many of Hitchcock’s films, the protagonist is an ordinary man who becomes entangled in trouble as a result of his private obsessions.
