Petulia (Julie Christie), one might say, is a rather unusual woman… and the circumstances surrounding her are equally unusual. Partly due to her own involvement, a young Mexican boy is hit by a car and operated on by surgeon Archie (George C. Scott). Petulia uses this event as an opportunity to begin an “affair” with him—though it is less a traditional romance and more a reflection of her eccentric personality. This does not sit well with her husband David (Richard Chamberlain), nor with his wealthy parents. Archie himself is divorced and currently involved with May (Pippa Scott), though he is uncertain whether he should reconcile with Polo (Shirley Knight), the mother of his two children. With Petulia’s arrival, a new sense of unrest spreads through all their relationships. Alongside it often comes love, and Archie—otherwise emotionally detached—begins to feel unexpectedly drawn to her. After finally spending a night together, Archie leaves to spend his Sunday with his sons. Upon returning home, he finds Petulia severely beaten. Although generally classified as a melodrama, Petulia is in fact a highly unusual and vibrant film—essentially a love story told from a distorted and fragmented perspective.
