In this dystopian adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s cult novel, François Truffaut’s first English-language film follows Guy Montag, a firefighter whose job is to burn banned books at 451°F in order to maintain enforced social equality and peace. Truffaut masterfully highlights the film’s sense of dystopian alienation by casting Julie Christie in a dual role—as Montag’s apathetic, television-obsessed wife Linda, and his rebellious neighbour Clarisse, who awakens his critical awareness. Through a cold, sterile visual style contrasted with the vivid red tones of the censorship-driven fire brigade, the film depicts a society that has replaced genuine humanity with shallow media illusion. Unlike the novel, the film ends on a more optimistic, humanist note, portraying a refuge of “book people” who, in snowy isolation, preserve literary works from memory in order to protect civilization’s cultural heritage from totalitarian oblivion. Tickets are available at the Art-kino box office (opening one hour before the first screening each day) or online via the CoreEvent platform.
