The Community of Italians of Rijeka was founded in 1946, during the period of Yugoslavia, under the name “Italian Cultural Circle of Rijeka”, officially inaugurated on 11 November of the same year. The association was established to coordinate Italian cultural events and bring together the various artistic and cultural groups active in Rijeka in the immediate post-war period. Following the Rijeka model, other Italian Cultural Circles were established throughout the areas of historic Italian settlement and were later renamed “Communities of Italians.” The Community of Italians of Rijeka works to preserve, affirm, disseminate and promote the language, culture, history and traditions of the Italian community in the city of Rijeka. In this regard, the Community works to preserve and develop the city’s cultural, historical, environmental, artistic, architectural and toponymic heritage, promote the introduction of bilingual signage, and restore the original place names of the area.
