The Natural History Museum Rijeka is located within Nikola Host Park and is the first regional museum in the Rijeka area, founded in 1876, when Dr. Joseph Roman Lorenz designed its concept based on the Vienna Naturhistorisches Museum. Initially part of the City Museum collection, it became an independent institution in 1945 and has since developed a rich collection at its current location, which also housed a zoo and aquarium until the 1960s. Today, the museum focuses on marine research and also maintains a specialized library in the fields of biology, geology, and paleontology. Visitors can enjoy extensive collections and a permanent exhibition presenting the geological past of the Adriatic, methods of oceanographic research, minerals, marine invertebrates, sharks and rays, as well as a multimedia aquarium center, reptiles, and amphibians from the Rijeka region.
