Radical Subjectivity, a major double solo exhibition by Katalin Ladik and Tomaso Binga at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, is the central event of the Museum’s summer exhibition programme. It brings together works by two prominent artists who, since the 1960s and 1970s, have developed experimental artistic practices focused on the relationship between language, the body and the voice. Hungarian artist Katalin Ladik, born in Novi Sad, and Italian artist Tomaso Binga (the real name of Bianca Pucciarelli Menna) are among the most significant practitioners of European visual poetry and performance. Through a radical questioning of the boundaries of language, voice and corporeality, their artistic practices address questions of identity, gender and subjectivity, while simultaneously creating spaces of resistance to dominant cultural, social and gender norms. In addition to their shared interest in visual poetry and the boundaries and potentials of language, the practices of Katalin Ladik and Tomaso Binga are connected by their exploration of identity and the performance of gender. Through collage, photography, performance and video, the artists transform language, voice, body and image into tools for shaping positions of identity and gender.
