BUSTER KEATON: THE GENERAL – Orchestrated Cinema As part of the Rijeka Summer Nights Festival, the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc and Art-kino present a unique open-air film and music experience – a screening of Buster Keaton’s silent film masterpiece “The General” (1926) accompanied live by the Rijeka Symphony Orchestra. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of this iconic film, audiences will have the opportunity to experience one of the greatest silent film classics with a live orchestral performance of composer Carl Davis’ score, conducted by Karlo Hubak. The film follows Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton), a clumsy yet fearless train engineer who, during the American Civil War, embarks on an extraordinary mission to recover his stolen locomotive and rescue the woman he loves. Inspired by real events, “The General” is now regarded as one of the most influential and successful films of the silent era. Famous for Keaton’s brilliant physical comedy, precisely choreographed action sequences, and breathtaking stunts performed without modern special effects, the film remains a timeless masterpiece. One of its most iconic moments is the spectacular destruction of a locomotive falling from a bridge, filmed in a single take. Orchestrated Cinema recreates the original magic of silent film screenings from the 1920s, bringing together the power of cinema and the emotion of a live orchestra performance. 🎻 Performed by: Rijeka Symphony Orchestra 🎼 Composer: Carl Davis 🎼 Conductor:…
