Slavenka Drakulić, born in Rijeka in 1949, is a journalist and writer who studied literature and sociology at the University of Zagreb. She writes in both Croatian and English, with many of her works translated into around thirty languages. Six of her titles have been published by Penguin in the United States. Her non-fiction work has focused on everyday life in socialism, the wars in the former Yugoslavia, and Europe more broadly. Her first essay collection, The Mortal Sins of Feminism (1984), was one of the earliest feminist contributions in Eastern Europe and has recently been republished in an expanded edition by Fraktura. She has since published numerous influential works, including How We Survived, They Would Never Hurt a Fly, Cafe Europa, The Balkan Express, A Guided Tour Through the Museum of Communism, and Baseless…
