Today, the tomato plays the role of an ordinary ingredient. But its past is far from innocent. It arrived in Europe as an exotic newcomer—slightly suspicious, slightly seductive. For a long time, it was cultivated purely as an ornamental plant and was believed to possess medicinal and even romantic properties. Pomme d’amour—the “apple of love,” as the French called it. Not exactly what comes to mind when looking at supermarket shelves today. What can you expect? A fascinating story about the plant that fooled an entire continent, followed by a cooking session where we will prepare a Mediterranean chutney that is neither ketchup, nor salsa, nor jam. Rich, fragrant, and balancing sweet, sour, and savoury flavours, this spread brings tomatoes together with a few unexpected companions.
