Among its most important actors are tugboats—powerful, reliable, and often invisible helpers that have for decades ensured the safe entry, exit, and maneuvering of ships. Although small in size compared to cargo and passenger vessels, tugboats have always been essential to port operations: they pull, push, turn, rescue, and respond at moments when precision is crucial. In this workshop, participants will explore the technical and historical aspects of tugboats, their different types, and their specific roles in port operations. Through photographs, short historical insights, and discussion, we will look at the development of Rijeka’s tugboats, their crews, and the challenges they faced in everyday work. In the hands-on part of the workshop, participants will create their own tugboat model using cardboard, wooden sticks, sponges, and recycled materials.
