The plot of the play Mom Got Drunk Like a Mother takes place during a single seemingly ordinary day in March 2025, in the apartment of a Zagreb family. Marina, a 52-year-old mother of three, decides to get drunk for the first time in her life—not out of a desire to relax or have fun, but out of a need to finally allow herself to tell the truth. What begins as an innocent decision turns into a series of encounters and conflicts with those closest to her: her husband, daughter, her daughter’s boyfriend, neighbors, and her own mother. As the evening unfolds, Marina, under the pretext of drunkenness, reveals years of suppressed thoughts, small lies, and compromises that have sustained the family and social peace. Her honesty shatters the illusion of harmonious relationships, opens up political, generational, and intimate differences, and exposes the mechanisms of politeness. The particularly painful relationship with her strict mother reveals how patterns of control and unspoken resentment are passed down from generation to generation. Mom Got Drunk Like a Mother is a play about the cost of long-term silence and the need, at some point—however clumsily and under any pretext—to speak the truth.
